Postnatal Support

Powerful, raw, vulnerable, joyous, scary, anxiety inducing, grief ridden, incredulous, numb, soft, blurry… I don’t know how to describe the postpartum period but I do know that it comes with so many emotions and often all at once. Birth and parenthood continues to surprise us and how we experience one birth may be so different to another.

I offer postpartum support through a variety of ways.

Postnatal Yoga

Practicing yoga after your baby is born is a gentle and lovely way to come back to your body and come back to yourself after a highly transformative and changeable time.

  • First and foremost I tend to your nervous system and emotional body in postnatal yoga. Through nervous system regulation, through meeting what is there emotionally, through rest, we can recover.

  • I support recovery on a physical, emotional and spiritual level. We work with recovery for the core and pelvic floor with whole-person awareness.

  • We feel into how posture, breath, stress and tension effect holding patterns across the body that may lead to symptoms in the pelvic floor and abdominal wall.

I always recommend a call or a one-to-one before you attend a postnatal class so I can understand your story and best support your recovery postnatally.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Most people come after their 6 week check up with their doctor. Sometimes people want to attend for community and rest and to gently stretch so I always welcome those indviduals even before the 6 week check up. Our recovery takes a lot longer than 6 weeks also.

  • Yes! The Postnatal Yoga (Bring Your Baby!) are designed with you and your baby in mind. It’s worth nothing that they are predominantly parent/mama focussed classes focused on you and your recovery.

  • Yes and this is always what I recommend! This way we can concentrate on you to begin with, understand how you are feeling and what you may be working with and I can work with you in a much more tailored way.

  • What if my baby cries?

That’s absolutely ok! Most babies do cry and you may feel like some sessions you don’t move much - and that’s ok! Eventually it will happen and I think there is so much to be gained from being in the space with other folk with their babies. Rest, breathwork and gentle stretches are still possible to do even with a babe in arms.

  • Mats and props are always provided but you’re welcome to bring toys, snacks for babies etc. You’re welcome to bring your pram into the space or anything else you may have. Your comfort, and that of your baby’s, is the most important thing!

I went to both pregnancy and post natal yoga with Alex and loved all of her classes. Alex is an amazing yoga teacher and always manages to create an environment that feels welcoming, nourishing and non-judgemental which is exactly what you need when pregnant and as a new mum! Each lesson is tailored to the needs of everyone in the class with the perfect balance of movement, rest and nourishment. Definitely one of the best things you can do during maternity leave in Sheffield!
